Getting Laid off can effect Physical and Mental Health

I just read an article (https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20230203-stress-anxiety-global-layoffs) on how being laid off can take a toll, on your physical and mental health. An Increase in health issues such as depression and anxiety. This can also affect employees that have not been given notice. Just the anticipation of having your position can cause these symptoms. I hope that companies recognize the toll It can take on employees that have not been affected. I am taking being laid off as a positive.

I am moving around a lot more and using the home gym we built in our garage. The gym has seen more use recently than in the last couple of years. I am feeling good about myself by getting a workout in. I had almost no time for myself during the day when I was employed. With back-to-back meetings, and working with my national/global team, my day would be over without leaving my desk. I was super busy and had very little work/home life balance. One of the criteria in looking for a new job will be that balance with family. I am treating looking for a new position like a full-time job, with the added benefit of the daily gym routine. If I am not working out in the gym, I have been taking our two doodles for a walk. I am feeling better about my physical self now and my Mental Health.

This seems to help me while I scour the Net for a meaningful position. Looking for a job when you were unexpectedly laid off takes a toll mentally on a person. A typical day for myself now looks like the following: 1. Out of bed between 5 and 6. Make coffee and read the News. 2. Online between 8 and 9 am, researching and sending out my resume. Trying to reach out to hiring managers for feedback if known. 3. I am making sure that I get up regularly and take breaks. Just before lunch, I take a walk. 4. I try and make sure that I keep up with my current skills and use online resources to help myself learn new ones. Getting Exercise daily can help keep a positive attitude. When things are not going your way, it is easy to question your worth. I am not an expert but if someone is starting to question their worth then it might sense to seek professional help.

How to get your Local or Public IP address on your Apple MacBook

After using Google to determine what people are searching for to get help.  I found that many people are searching for their IP addresses.  It was unclear if they were looking for their local IP or the IP being presented to the Public.  The Public IP would be the one that Is provided to them by their ISP (Internet Service Provider) and is considered a Public routable address.  One of the reasons why you would want to find your Public address would be to have a Firewall opened somewhere to let you have access.   You can either login to your local router and look for the IP that your Service provider is giving you or you can access a service that will see what IP address you are viewing from. I usually use the following URL.

https://www.whatismypublicip.com

To get your IP address for an Apple MacBook Pro, you have two different options. You can find it by accessing the Terminal or system settings.

Terminal:

To view by accessing the Terminal, you would Launch it by clicking on the Launchpad then going to the “Other” folder and selecting terminal.  When you are in the Terminal you would run the following Command. Remember that the MAC OS is built upon Linux, so at the terminal, you have access to all the Linux Commands that you are familiar with.   By adding the “|more” to the end of the command it will page the command.  To continue to the next page just hit the space bar.  Using the “ifconfig” all the interfaces on the Desktop/laptop will be visible. The interface that you will commonly find your IP address under is the “en0” interface.

Ifconfig |more

System Settings:

To find your address via the System Settings. You will need to click on the Apple Icon at the upper left-hand corner of your screen. Choose “System Settings” and then select “Network”.  At this point, you should see your Local IP address.  If you don’t see the address, you might have a VPN connection setup and you will need to turn off the VPN to see your local IP.

50 and looking for Work

Just recently informed that my position and a couple of coworkers' positions were no longer needed. So just like that, I have been caught up in the latest round of Tech Layoffs.

The recent developments in my career have put many plans on hold and now have me searching for a job to help sustain myself and my family. At first, I thought that this was just another bump in the road called life. A friend told me that with my age and gray hair, I would be fighting ageism. I just turned the big 50 recently.

Googling and reading some articles on aging workers has me a bit worried. I read on LinkedIn from JohnGself “johngself.com”, that it takes 4 times longer for people in my age bracket to find a job. Also, younger generations seem to be job-hopping even during this recession.

I do see Companies are posting positions, however, there will be fierce competition for those jobs.  A few that I have applied for in the short time, that I have been unemployed have already had more than 200+ applicants.  I met with a "Career Strategist" paid for and recommended by my former company. The Career Strategist has suggested not to reference or quote anything that might put an age to me, like some older SNL skits or movie quotes. I kept thinking about the sound a dial-up modem makes when trying to access the internet. How exciting it was to buy, a new 56k modem to replace our 14.4k modem. Younger people will not be able to relate to that unique sound.

I have been reaching out to my contacts, and networking, I am open to new opportunities.

Searching for a Job after being Laid off

If you have been following my Blog, you will know that I was recently laid off.  It has been and continues to be a journey.  It was not some...
